The Social (434 S. 2nd St.) hosted a hip-hop, beat-laced extravaganza, Sat., Sept. 8. The docket included performances by Old Man Malcolm, Def Harmonic and a combined effort from Djs T-Nek and J-Slim. The beat was bumpin' all night long.
Old Man Malcolm, DJ of the now defunct Citizen King, started things off and spun records, sampled beats, scratched and played a Moog synthesizer. The music was heavy, with loops and synthesizer riffs flowing in and out of each other. Malcolms set blew everybody away. An impressive musician, he is the king of the one-man show.
Next up was Def Harmonic, made up of MCs Lunaversol and Jason Todd, along with DJ T-Nek. One of Milwaukee's unknown hip-hop groups, Def Harmonic has been performing for about two years. In this time they have put out two EPs: "Transmission" and the latest, "Travel Suggestions." With smooth rhymes, infectious beats and turntable wizardry, Def Harmonic is looking to make a mark on Milwaukee hip-hop.
Def Harmonic's DJ T-Nek and J-Slim, DJ from the Rusty Pelicans, took the stage for some labor-intensive turntabilism to finish the night with a bang. This was hard-core hip-hop/rap; sampling, beats and expert scratching kept the crowd moving. They mixed in some Wu-Tang Clan, Eazy-E, Digable Planets and much more. It was good to see that big beats and past rappers still stand the test of time.
