The last Friday of April marks Arbor Day, and to celebrate, Mayor Tom Barrett will help plant trees in a city-owned vacant lot located on the southeast corner of 14 and North at 9 a.m. Third and fourth graders from the Milwaukee College Preparatory School's Lloyd Street Campus will join him.

The event – a part of a greater overall Arbor Day effort in all aldermanic districts to plant trees in vacant city-owned lots – will complement a new pocket park planned for the neighborhood, as well as help to convert these empty spaces into revitalizing assets for residents' use and enjoyment.

In addition to the tree planting, Milwaukee will also receive two awards from the National Arbor Day Foundation: the city's 36th consecutive Tree City USA award and its sixth Growth Award.
