If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these amazingly beautiful and so very powerful images from Time photographer Elinor Carucci are truly priceless.
In a Time.com post today, the New York-based photographer shows 12 images taken at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Additional images are featured in the print version of the magazine and on this week's cover.
According to the story, "Carucci spent the better part of two days with (baby) David and his parents in the hospital." In the brief story the photographer discusses her "personal connection she developed with the child and parents, and talks about her approach to photography."
Baby David was born at 28 weeks gestation.
Jeff Kluger, Time's health/science editor, visited Children's Hospital of Wisconsin NICU care givers in January and April. In addition, Time's deputy director of photography and photographers spent three days shooting photos of micro preemies in the NICU.
Gerry Steele at Children's said, "Photographers spent hours taking pics of the babies, carefully framing shots around care and safety measures the nurses made sure to monitor."
David was born Jan. 28, at 28 weeks gestation. He weighed 2 pounds, 13 ounces and left the NICU on April 17.
"He's doing extremely well, too. He weighs over 10 pounds now and his mom's nicknamed him 'puppy'," says Steele.
The gallery and story are featured in Time’s LightBox section within its The Backstory segment.
The print story features two other preemies born at Children's. The cover baby is Emalyn. Emalyn and her twin brother Owen (not pictured) were born on March 21, at 29 weeks gestation. Emalyn weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces, and Owen weighed just three ounces more. Their due date was June 2.
According to Steele, Owen went home this past Monday weighing in at 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and is "doing great." Emalyn, also 6 pounds, 6 ounces, should be going home very soon.
"She just needs a little extra help learning how to drink from a bottle," said Steele.
