It's time for Dining Month, presented by Deer District and its spooky Halloween-themed alter ego, Fear District. Throughout the month of October, we'll be serving up fun and fascinating content about all things food. The signature dish, however, is our 2019 Best of Dining poll, who's winners we will dish out all month long. Get hungry, Milwaukee!
Grebe’s Bakery
After topping the poll for a number of years, the long-lived Brady Street Italian bakery, Peter Sciortino's, was edged out by a single vote this time around by another Milwaukee landmark.
Grebe's was started in 1937 in the home of founder Irene Grebe, making its 10 years Sciortino's senior.
From delicious bread, danish, cookies and, especially, THOSE crullers, Grebe's deserves its newly earned title.
Sciortino's, which makes the best Italian cookies in town and some great Italian bread, too, finished second.
While the OnMilwaukee editorial staff is especially fond of Rocket Baby's incredible baguettes and pastries, dining writer Lori Fredrich selected Amaranth, whose bakery and cafe are located on Lisbon Avenue.
Runners-up:
2. Peter Sciortino’s
3. Rocket Baby
4. Simma’s Bakery
5. National Bakery and Deli
OnMilwaukee editors’ pick: Rocket Baby
Lori Fredrich’s pick: Amaranth
