If things look a little greener around here this April, there's a good reason. Our editorial staff is busy expanding the ideals of Earth Day into a month-long celebration of energy conservation, alternative transportation, recycling tips and about a million ways you can be a better friend to the planet. Welcome to Green Month, Milwaukee.

Last month I told you about what the relatively new Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op was up to these days and how you could get involved if you wanted to.

The Co-op's recent Value Gathering at Bucketworks was a success, board member Jason Haas tells us. If you missed the last gathering, but have ideas for the betterment of the co-op, another one is scheduled for 12:30-4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 20 at Bucketworks, 1340 N. 6th St.

"While the co-op had some steep challenges, we are working with Bucketworks to rebuild the co-op. It's been a fantastic process, and by the end of it the co-op will be reborn with a home new set of goals and a new location. It probably will be at Bucketworks," he says.

The Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op is currently located at Future Green, a self-sustaining, organic living retail store at 2352 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. Haas says there isn't a definite timeline yet for the new co-op location.

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
