What’s with the new NFL referee garb? They look like skin tight body armor, and the numbers have shrunk to unreadable size. What was wrong with the regular black and white stripes? These sort of have a World Cup feel about them.
When the Packers take on the Dolphins in Miami on October 22nd, they'll be facing two former quarterbacks from the NFC North. Duante Culpepper and Joey Harrington both played in Miami’s preseason loss to Jacksonville. Looks out of place seeing both of those guys in aqua and orange.
Give Ned Yost credit for doing the right thing sitting tail-spinning Geoff Jenkins down. Some may argue that it took the Brewers skipper too long to pull the rip cord, but instead, view it as a manager not turning knee-jerk, and giving a veteran time to work things out. Yost did…Jenkins did not.
Along the same lines, did you notice the different reactions Jenkins and Derrick Turnbow had to their demotions? Jenkins pouts, while Turnbow points the finger back at himself.
It seems that Yost gave Jenkins plenty of leash to work with, and then some, but to Geoff, it still wasn't enough. The key here, is that Yost has options in Gabe Gross and Corey Hart. Turnbow puts the blame for his flame-out on his shoulders, and feels terrible that he has cost the team victories. The man who gathered a standing room only crowd on his Bobblehead night hasn't let that fame be the reason he deserves to still be Milwaukee’s closer.
You know you're getting old when you stop by the Milwaukee Bucks booth at the Wisconsin State Fair, where the team displayed every jersey worn in franchise history, and you remember each and every one! I even knew all the past players represented. If you were wondering where Cornell Warner’s red and green uniform went, the Bucks still have it.
Kevin Harlan is as good as they get announcing NFL games, and the Packers are lucky to have Bob’s son aboard for the local preseason package. During the opener in San Diego, Harlan constantly noted new players shuffling in and out during the game and doled out tidbits of info on all the new faces. Not easy to do in preseason match up number one, where coaches want a look-see at all the bodies, and the sideline resembles a line change in hockey at times.
Craig Karmazin and ESPN 1510 should be applauded for gobbling up the Marquette basketball package. They didn't let a short range signal bog them down, instead, Karmazin and company formed a marketing package and a relationship, which is what sealed the deal on the Golden Eagles end. And please don't use the weak signal red flag. Tom Crean and company can be heard all over the world streaming live on the web, available free of charge on three different sites, including this one.
Where did this John Stocco surgery come from? Did anyone else see this coming? It’s like they checked the Badgers quarterback into the hospital late at night, keeping it a big secret, then sprung the news on us in the morning. And how many games will the senior miss? Not sure.
Check out the new home of the Arizona Cardinals, it’s a gem. For a franchise that has never been able to draw valley of the sun fans, to sit IN the sun all day and cheer on a morbid franchise, this new house will rejuvenate the fans by keeping them cool and comfortable. And it just may entice future free agents into Phoenix. Edgerrin James is a good start.
Preseason football still just doesn't cut it. I find it hard dedicating myself to three hours worth of couch time to watch guys who won't make the team. I pray for the day that the NFL cuts them in half -- let’s play two, then tee it up for real. I'd rather attend a 2-year-olds birthday party than waste time in front of the football tube. Come to think of it -- that’s exactly what I did. My son, Bo, beat out the Packers for all of my family and friends attention this weekend.
High school football season begins in less than two weeks, with the first games of the prep campaign kicking off on August 25th. Sorry boys, summer is over!
Really hated to see Joe Smith leave the Bucks. From the basketball standpoint, General Manager Larry Harris did a good job of shoring up the small forward slot. But Joe will be missed in the locker room, and by the media. A true gentleman, the veteran always dished out honest answers after a game, win or lose.
Hockey fans and people in general have voiced their opinions loud and clear, and the majority think the Milwaukee Admirals new skeleton pirate logo and jersey should walk the plank. Well someone likes it. The Admirals tell me that they sold more merchandise in the first six days than they did all of last season.
Bob currently does play-by-play at Time Warner Cable Sports 32, calling Wisconsin Timber Rattlers games in Appleton as well as the area high school football and basketball scene. During an earlier association with FS Wisconsin, his list of teams and duties have included the Packers, Bucks, Brewers and the WIAA State Championships.
During his life before cable, Bob spent seven seasons as a reporter and producer of "Preps Plus: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel High School Sports Show."
And the joke is, Bob has a golf shirt from all four Milwaukee television stations. Sad, but true: Bob has had sports and news anchor/reporter/producer stints at WTMJ, WISN, WDJT and WITI.
His first duty out of college (UW-Oshkosh) was radio and TV work in Eau Claire. Bob spent nearly a decade at WEAU-TV as a sports director and reporter.
You may have heard Bob's pipes around town as well. He has done play-by-play for the Milwaukee Mustangs, Milwaukee Iron, and UW-Milwaukee men's and women's basketball. Bob was the public address announcer for five seasons for both the Marquette men and women's basketball squads. This season, you can catch the starting lineups of the UW-Milwaukee Panther men's games with Bob behind the mic.
A Brookfield Central graduate, Bob's love and passion for sports began at an early age, when paper football leagues, and Wiffle Ball All Star Games were all the rage in the neighborhood.
