Talking back to a movie is typically frowned upon, but not when you're "Mystery Science Theater 3000."
The beloved public access show-turned-cult TV hit – featuring people and puppets launched into space to sit down, watch unbearably cheesy cornball movies and sling jokes – entertained audiences for years. And while it was cancelled in 1999, the show and its screwball collection of characters certainly influenced a whole generation of people live-tweeting, commentating and riffing on events – for better or worse, but mostly the former.
The show's original spirit, cast and crew found ways to live on as well, whether it be through Cinematic Titanic or RiffTrax. "MST3k" itself, however, has remained dormant.
That is, until this morning.
Creator and original host (not to mention Stevens Point native) Joel Hodgson announced a Kickstarter campaign aimed at bringing "MST3k" back with new episodes. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hodgson hopes the campaign will reassemble much of its original creative team, as well as bring some new faces to launch into space and torture with crappy B-movies.
"Basically, I’m trying to blend the old with the new," Hodgson told Entertainment Weekly. "'Mystery Science Theater' has already refreshed itself once with a completely new cast, so I think it deserves to do that again. The original cast is going to be invited back to write, produce, and do cameos as their mad science characters, and then there’s a new cast with new talent."
The campaign's opening goal is a lofty $2 million for three episodes, with the eventual goal of 12 episodes for $5.5 million. It's a lot to raise, but with a whole month left to go, the Kickstarter has already raised over $100,000 and steadily counting.
With your help, we may be able to reunite with some old friends over some new cinematic trash in the not-too-distant future ...
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
