The Canoemobile is back!

The DNR and Friends of Lakeshore Park are bringing back Wilderness Inquiry’s Canoemobile, a traveling fleet of 24-foot, 10-person North canoes that come equipped with a crew of outdoor educators.

The Canoemobile, which arrives here for a Group Science Inquiry and Canoe Workshop on Monday, Aug. 15, also offers a public workshop and drop-in event on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

The events are free and open to children in the fourth grade or above and who weigh more than 30 pounds. There will be waivers to sign.

The Monday event for schools, families and community groups and runs from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Registration is required. Email  elaine.zautke@wisconsin.gov or angela.vickio@wisconsin.org.

The public workshop and drop-in has two sessions that require reservations – 12:30-1:45 and 2-3:15 p.m. – as well as a first-come, first-serve event from 5 until 7 p.m. There will be a beach bonfire with free smores from 7 until 9.

Meet at the pebble beach area at Lakeshore State Park on the Milwaukee lakefront, just north of the Summerfest grounds.

We Are Water: We Go to the Water

The same weekend, Milwaukee Water Commons brings back its annual free, family-friendly beachfront celebration, We Are Water: We Go to the Water.

The event, Sunday, Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at South Shore Park Beach, 2900 S. Shore Dr., includes interactive informational displays and activities about beach and waterway restoration, as well as music and an illuminated art installation coordinated by Ken Brown, LaSonia Ragsdale and the True Skool AquaPioneers.

Emceed by Carmen Alicia Murguia, the event includes the participation of Waterway Restoration Partnership, True Skool, Milwaukee County Parks, Watermarks, Plastic Free MKE, Overpass Light Brigade and more.

There will be food and beverage available at the South Shore Terrace Beer Garden.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.

He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.

With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.

He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.

In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.

He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
