Former Milwaukeean Jeff Castelaz was named "Person of the Week" today by ABC News.
The Los Angeles-based Castelaz, co-founder of Dangerbird Records, received the honor for his work with the Pablove Foundation, which raises money and awareness for children's cancer. Recently, Castelaz completed a 30-day bike ride that crossed the entire United States.
He established the foundation with his wife, Jo Ann Thrailkill. The couple lost a son, 6-year-old Pablo, to cancer earlier this year after a 13-month battle.Castelaz started out as a WMSE DJ and a music writer for the now-defunct Downtown Edition and other mags.
But he soon found himself guiding what was then Brew City's hottest bands, Citizen King. He went on to work with everyone from The Gufs to Willy Porter to Paul Cebar.
In January, the Milwaukee musicians will team up for the Pablove Benefit Concert. Among the groups participating are Fever Marlene, The Gufs, The Lackloves, Maritime, Mike Benign, Old Man Malcom, Pet Engine and Truth in Fiction.
