Milwaukee’s first hostel – called Cream City Hostel – plans to open to the public on June 1 in the Riverwest neighborhood, 500 E. Center St. Thus fundraising and construction are currently underway.

"We are so lucky to have worked with an amazing developer Juli Kaufman, who specializes in community-driven development," says co-founder Wendy Mesich.

Massive interest in the hostel from travelers around the world suggests an extremely busy first few months, especially since it will be summer and peak vacation time. Businesses usually prefer to work out the kinks the first few weeks or months of business, but the hostel won’t have that opportunity.

Not that Mesich or her partners are complaining. Opening the hostel is a dream come true for the dedicated team of workers and volunteers.

"Hostels build cultural understanding for the guests and the communities that host them. They bring fiscal and social capital to the neighborhoods and cities while facilitating authentic experiences," says Mesich. 

The hostel is located inside a former bank building, constructed in 1927. 

"The hostel will help show off our city – from the big festivals to a quiet river walk or biking experience to everywhere in between," Mesich says.
