Every week in 2015, OnMilwaukee.com and local design company Too Much Metal join forces to introduce the latest member of the Milwaukee All-Stars – a team of unfamiliar winners living in the city who consistently and diligently make it shine. Each week, a new member will join the team – based on your recommendations – and at the end of the year all will come together in a Rally of the Raddest Milwaukeeans. We're not sure what that means quite yet, so for now, meet …
Derek Mosley
Municipal court judge Derek Mosley worked as a prosecutor for the City of Milwaukee for eight years before he became a judge at 31, making him the youngest African-American judge in the history of the state.
For those who know him and his commitment to Milwaukee – particularly Milwaukee youth – Mosley has surpassed expectations on both sides of the bench.
He is a fair and honest judge, a committed husband and father and an aficionado of Milwaukee cuisine.
OnMilwaukee.com / Too Much Metal: What do you love about your job?
Derek Mosley: I love what I do because there's never a dull moment. There is so much variety in what I do. Whether it's the different people which represent every segment of the population of Milwaukee, to the cases I handle, you can hear stories that will make you laugh harder than you've ever laughed before, and you hear stories that just tear at your soul. On any given day I can hear traffic cases, drug cases, juvenile cases, assault and battery cases, parking, to health ("dirty dining") cases and building code cases.
OMC / TMM: What is your favorite or least favorite Milwaukee smell?
DM: My favorite smell in Milwaukee is found any Saturday afternoon in the summer in Washington or Lincoln Parks. The whole park is filled with families grilling ribs, burgers, chicken and roasting corn over charcoal. As the smoke billows through the park, you can smell it for miles and it's heavenly. It also signifies that summer has arrived in Milwaukee.
OMC / TMM: What would you change about Milwaukee if you could?
DM: The one thing I would change about Milwaukee is I would love to see as much investment in neighborhoods throughout the city as we see Downtown. There are some neighborhoods that could use an infusion of new ideas and development.
OMC / TMM: Who would you like to high-five in Milwaukee?
DM: I would like to high five Young Kim of the Fondy Market. Not only does he provide a venue to purchase fresh, locally sourced produce, but he has found a way to do it that appeals to all segments of Milwaukee's population, and it's being done in the heart of the central city. It's one of the most diverse places in the city on a weekend and truly showcases all that is great about this city.
OMC/ TMM: What is your guilty pleasure?
DM: My guilty pleasure is The Prince Sandwich from Ashley's BBQ. It's life altering.
