At OnMilwaukee, we believe in lifting up all voices and using our platform to support others’ dreams.  And that's what we hope to do for Dominic the Food Reviewer. When I first met Dominic almost two years ago, I was impressed by his passion, his curiosity and his interest in improving his writing. Over time,  I’ve not only enjoyed getting to know him better, but he has taught me as much as I have him. My hope is that you’ll not only enjoy reading Dominic’s reviews, but also glean understanding and joy from seeing the world of food through his eyes. -- Lori Fredrich, Dining Editor

This weekend I got to check out an authentic Mexican restaurant that  even offers different kinds of fresh seafood dishes. The name of the Mexican and seafood restaurant is called La Casa del Chivolin. It is located at 2423 S. 6th St., next to St. Josaphat’s church. 

I had the honor to meet the owners Francisco, and his wife Flor, which means flower in Spanish. I think that is such a beautiful name. I also got to meet their son Francisco Jr.

Fransisco mentioned that their restaurant has been operating in this location for a year and a half. Francisco Jr. father used to be a comedy clown, and did metal polishing for Harley Davidson. Fransisco was doing that for twenty five years, and he brought home made ceviche to his whole family, and with him to his clown comedy shows. He started from there, and it is his passion to cook outstanding food for residents, customers and so much more in the local community. 

What I thought about the decor was that it was ocean themed on half of the restaurant with ocean animals and that kind of theme. I would say it was very well kept up and they had booths and tables throughout the restaurant where big groups of families, friends or colleagues can sit and listen to karaoke, and enjoy their meals. 

Francisco and his wife Flor explained all the dishes very well and answered all my questions. His son was super nice, and knew a lot about Seafood, and Mexican foods. 

I ordered a cocktail from the bar while I was there. It is a Mexican style kind of cocktail called Mangonada, which has mango in it. The cocktail that I tried was super refreshing.

Francisco told me that their most popular dishes are Camerones boataneros which can be shared. Camerones boataneros is shrimp that is spicy with tasty seasoning on it. 

All their tortilla chips, and sauces, and tortillas are made in house. I tried all of their sauces while I was trying all my Mexican, and seafood dishes. Those sauces included the house sauce, tamarin sauce and sweet and spicy sauce.

I tried the Camerones boataneros. It’s a peel and eat shrimp. I devoured most of my shrimp, and I absolutely am a huge fan of getting my fingers messy when I’m eating my food.

I also took some pictures of their seafood tower with shrimp, and octopus, and Aguachiles ceviche.

We even took a picture of a six pack of beer with an appetizer of shrimp around it. I have never seen any dish that stood out to me like this one did.  When I go back there the next time, I’m going to have some friends come with me to share it. It was super humungous looking!

For my main course meal, I got to try their steak burrito which had toppings that included sliced tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, salsa and it came with a side of cucumber coins, rice and refried beans.  It was super well presented, I thought.

That sliced steak that was inside the huge burrito had a tenderness to it. That is the way I absolutely enjoy steak. What I thought was very interesting was that cucumbers came with my steak burrito, rice, and refried beans. I have never seen that before. Those cucumbers tasted super fresh and their rice and refried beans mixed well together.  I absolutely thought it was super scrumptious in my opinion. You can never ever go wrong with a steak burrito.

If you ever go to La Casa De Chivolin I would highly suggest ordering the camerones boataneros because it’s amazing, and I learned so much about how to eat it since I never had peel and eat shrimp before this. Get ready to get messy though, because you are going to be eating these with your hands. I want to thank Francisco Jr., Francisco, and, Flor for welcoming me to their Mexican and seafood restaurant, and giving me a positive experience. In fact I learned a new word called Bienvenidos which means welcome in Spanish. They sang happy birthday to someone, and lots of the restaurant joined in. It’s a very fun place.

They do Karaoke after 9 p.m. too, in the back seating areas. It is such blast to hear them singing. Francisco Jr also said he’s working on getting English menus out soon, since some of their current menu is in Spanish. He said the staff will gladly help you with the menu until then. We had no trouble finding delicious items to try.
