At OnMilwaukee, we believe in lifting up all voices and using our platform to support others’ dreams.  And that's what we hope to do for Dominic the Food Reviewer. When I first met Dominic almost two years ago, I was impressed by his passion, his curiosity and his interest in improving his writing. Over time,  I’ve not only enjoyed getting to know him better, but he has taught me as much as I have him. My hope is that you’ll not only enjoy reading Dominic’s reviews, but also glean understanding and joy from seeing the world of food through his eyes. -- Lori Fredrich, Dining Editor

This past weekend, I got to visit Sloppy Joe’s Saloon & Spoon, 3723 Hubertus Rd. in Hubertus. They offer all kinds of food, including BBQ, sandwiches, burgers, pizza and, of course, sloppy joes.

I had the honor to meet one of the owners, Joe Hennes. He operates Sloppy Joe’s with his wife. He told me that he grew up in Hubertus and opened the bar and restaurant almost twenty years ago. Joe wanted to help revitalize the community of Hubertus. He originally bought the building just to fix it up and sell it; but he fell in love with the building, which was built in the 1860s.

The decor is very beautiful inside, decorated with some Christmas lights and Christmas decorations. It seems to have a Northwoods theme. There's a fireplace with stone around it and TV’s so customers can watch their favorite sporting events.

Our waitress's name was Kailie and she took very outstanding care of us. She was super pleasant, kind and went over the menu with me. I thought she had so much positivity, and was really friendly. She talked to me about their food and even recommended some other restaurants that I should try in Hubertus in the near future.

For my appetizer, I tried their housemade beer battered cheese curds that were served with homemade ranch on the side. They use Renard’s cheese out of Door County Wisconsin.

The cheese curds were very lightly breaded and just perfectly cooked. They had a nice light, creamy taste, especially when I was dipping them in ranch. I thought they were top notch and I would definitely get them again when I go back.

For my main course, I tried their Sloppy Joe Melt. It included their signature sloppy joes sandwich meat, which is made with a hint of Guinness beer. You can get a choice of rye bread, white bread or wheat bread for your melt. I ordered white bread.

I thought the meat had a nice hint of the Guinness beer and it was yummy for my tummy. The bread was just perfectly cooked on top and made the sloppy Joe have a nice balance to it with bread that was nice and toasted.  For my side, I ordered their BBQ baked beans. They had a nice sweet flavor and the cooks did a magnificent job.

My Dad ordered their half rack of ribs with a side of mac and cheese and tater tots. He said that they fell right off the bone and were very tender.

I would highly recommend trying Sloppy Joe’s Restaurant and Saloon.  If you go there,  give the melt and cheese curds a try because I could not stop eating them.
