While we're all looking forward to the weekend, we're also taking a look back into the OnMilwaukee archives, picking out five of our writers' favorite articles from the past – from special deep dives into local history, to entertainingly informative pieces about culture or cuisine, to some just plain ridiculousness.

Enjoy these blasts from the past 25 years of OnMilwaukee! (Click the embedded links to read the entire article.)

"Urban spelunking: Flushing out the reason for that lone basement toilet"

Toilet in the basementX

"Maybe you’ve seen one, or maybe there’s even one sitting – regally – center-stage in the middle of your basement.

"I’m talking about that lonely toilet, often smack dab in the middle of the basement of some pre-World War II homes, often with no sink or tub/shower and, often without even any walls for privacy. ...

"Although a number of explanations for this puzzling plumbing swirl around, it’s possible that they are reasons No. 1 and No. 2 in a more complex explanation, and one that depends on geography." [Read more right here]

"10 food words you're probably pronouncing incorrectly"

Food words you're pronouncing wrongX

"If you're like most Milwaukeeans, you've learned to love the popular hot sauce with the rooster on the bottle, you've probably picked up a gyro or two for dinner on at least a few occasions, and you might even start your day with a shot of espresso. But, are you actually pronouncing the names of those foods correctly?

The game will also show off Fiserv Forum's ice capabilities, because while the Bucks may have made it happen, this arena wasn't just meant for basketball when it was built." [Read more right here]

"The life and death of Sydney Hih"

Sydney HihX

"The massive, decrepit, patchwork-painted Sydney Hih (pronounced 'high') buildings, which splayed on the corner of 3rd and Juneau from the mid-1800s to 2012, went through many transformations over the years, but are remembered by many Milwaukeeans as a sanctuary of counter-culture that created and quelled bands, businesses, relationships and lives." "Shift switch: Civil War reenactor"

Matt in the Civil WarX

"Every now and then, the writers here at OnMilwaukee.com decide to give other, unique jobs a try. Bobby Tanzilo, for instance, worked as a cheesemaker for a daya record store clerk and harvested soybeans. Publisher Andy Tarnoff spent a day with a Milwaukee police officer on the K-9 unit. Senior writer Molly Snyder has sampled careers as a magician’s assistantdiaper washer (a job that somehow exists and is a thing) and most recently, a role in the Milwaukee Ballet’s 'The Nutcracker.'

"Me? Well, I recently fought in the Civil War." [Read more right here]
