On Thursday, Riverwest's Gathering Place Brewing Company announced it will open a second brewery and taproom location the new Flour & Feed food hall and marketplace in Bay View.
Flour & Feed will open on the ground floor of New Land Enterprises' Kinetik Apartments, 2160 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. The site is just around the corner from Enlightened Brewing and 1840 Brewing.
The Flour & Feed location will function as a satellite taproom with its own brewing system, said owner Joe Yeado, who lives in Bay View, in a news release.
“Our pilot brewery and taproom within the Flour & Feed Marketplace is a unique concept among food halls nationwide. The brewing system will allow us to experiment with new recipes while the taproom provides the chance to share beers made onsite and from our Riverwest brewery,” said Yeado, who opened Gathering Place Brewing at 811 E. Vienna Ave., in 2017.
“We started Gathering Place Brewing with the idea of using beer and a taproom to bring the community together. We're proud of what we've accomplished in 3 years in Riverwest and we're excited about expanding that idea in Bay View.”
Yeado said the new location will have a one-barrel system built by Gathering Place's Riverwest neighbors, Spike Brewing.
"We'll use it to make special, one-off beers for the Bay View location, while also serving beer made in Riverwest," Yeado told OnMilwaukee.
New Land's Tim Gokhman said the new food hall will help invigorate the busy intersection of Kinnickinnic Avenue and Bay Street.
"One of our main goals with Flour & Feed was to bring a feeling of energy and community to a forgotten and underutilized corner of Bay View.
"Gathering Place Brewing has strong ties to the neighborhood, and Joe really understands the community space we're creating with the plaza and the adjacent Zillman Park. We are thrilled to have them as a partner in this exciting project."
Yeado, meanwhile, says he hopes to collaborate with his fellow Flour & Feed tenants.
“We're excited to work with the other small businesses in the Marketplace to create a fun community space on the north end of the neighborhood," he said.
The new location will be Bay View's sixth brewery, meaning it will have more than any other Milwaukee neighborhood, said Yeado.
“As a Bay View resident, I want the neighborhood to be known as much for its beer as its outstanding restaurants and bars,” he said. “There is excellent beer being made in the neighborhood and we believe our European-inspired, sessionable beers will fit in nicely.”
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
