After a hiatus, Gerry’s Diamond Tap, 939 E. Lincoln Ave., is once again open.
We stopped in tonight and had a beer with Joe Torres, whose wife, Rhonda, is the current owner. The bar was originally operated by her parents, Gerry and Pete, who have both passed away.
"Not a lot of people can say this, but my in-laws were really great," says Joe Torres. "They were always very supportive."
According to Torres, the couple originally felt obligated to close the bar, but a somewhat sudden change in their circumstances enabled them to reopen.
They also discovered that the period Gerry's was closed provided the impetus to make some changes.
The couple made improvements, including new paint and two new televisions, along with NFL Sunday Ticket for Packers games.
"There are still more upgrades we plan to do," he says.
Gerry’s Diamond Tap, in existence for 25 years, is open from Tuesday to Friday from noon to bar time and from 7 a.m. to bar time on weekends. (Yes, you read that right: the bar opens at 7 a.m. on weekends.)
Although the massive snack selection was neglected for a while during the closed period, Torres says he plans to restock most of the munchies on one of those closed Mondays.
Other specials at Gerry’s include all day / every day $1.50 Pabst and Blatz as well as Old Style beers for $1 (while inventory lasts).
