Hot on the heels of the hometown release of Kings Go Forth's debut LP, soul revivalists Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings return to Brew City for a Saturday, May 22 performance at The Pabst Theater.
If the band is half as tight and blistering as it was on its recent Letterman appearance, Milwaukee is in for the retro R&B event of the year.
Jones & the Dap Kings recently released "I Learned the Hard Way" -- gorgeous in its late-era Impressions-style sleeve -- and it's been garnering great reviews for its killer rhythm section, brassy horns and, especially, Jones' amazingly powerful and expressive vocal instrument.
Because we want you to be able to experience all that for yourself, we're giving away a Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings prize package that includes two tickets to the show at The Pabst, a Sharon Jones turntable slipmat and a copy of the out of print 7" 45 "When I Come Home."

Show time is 8 p.m. and opening is Britain's The Heavy, who made quite an impression on Letterman -- the show AND the man -- themselves. After they finishing kicking their latest single, "How You Like Me Now," Dave asked them to do an almost unheard-of encore of the searing, horn-laced soul track. Sage Francis has been one of indie hip-hop's all stars for years, earning fans with his dry sense of humor, semi-radical political savvy and infectious beats. He's gone from performing basements in small clubs to playing Coachella in a matter of a few albums, but some are wondering if his latest release, "Li(f)e," has taken an even bigger leap towards the mainstream? He teamed up with Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, members of Califone, Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle and Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous (who passed away in early March) for this one, perhaps trying to appeal more to the indie rock crowd? Decide for yourself. Sage Francis plays Turner Hall Ballroom Thursday, May 20 at 8 p.m. with a live band. -- Julie Lawrence
The fact that Nickelback sells millions of records and concert tickets is perplexing to some. Others get so mad that they practically freak out about it. Nickelback’s current tour stops in Milwaukee Friday night at the Bradley Center. Nickelback fans have been salivating for this show for weeks, but many others are stoked to see opening acts Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin and Sick Puppies. --Drew Olson
