Milwaukee's The Goodnight Loving releases its debut disc on Portland, Ore. Dirtnap Records, "The Goodnight Loving Supper Club" on July 20. You can get a preview of one of the 13 songs, "The Pan," here. The disc is the band's fourth overall.
The band will play a pair of hometown gigs this summer including a record release party at Linneman's Riverwest Inn on July 17 and Aug. 7 at the Cream City Music Festival in Catalano Square in the Third Ward.
Meanwhile, The New Loud releases its new full-length disc on June 4 at the Cactus Club. "Secrets" will be the first single from the disc, called "Measures Melt." You can watch a video for it here.
In other summer news, Britain's Keane (yes, it rhymes with Queen) -- which made its Milwaukee debut at The Rave about seven years ago -- has now grown into bigger venues as it tours in support of its fourth disc, "Night Train."
That train rolls into the Riverside on Aug. 10 bringing Travis frontman Fran Healy and Ingrid Michaelson as openers.
Later this week you can catch Hurricane Bells at the Cactus Club. The new project from Longwave's Steve Schiltz plays at the Cactus Club on Saturday.
Schiltz created the entire "Tonight Is the Ghost" disc by himself on his MacBook and MBox and planned to put it out himself. But then one of the songs he recorded, "Monsters," was tapped for the soundtrack to "Twilight Saga: New Moon" and instead got snatched up by Vagrant Records and put together a band.
While Keane may conjure some '80s musical memories for some of us, Men At Work's Colin Hay created music in the '80s that remains fixed in the brains of a lot of people. A regular visitor to Milwaukee, Hay returns on Wednesday, May 19 for a show at Turner Hall. He brings along his latest Compass Records disc, "American Sunshine."
Although I was never a fan of Men at Work, I heard Hay do solo versions of his hits last year and enjoyed it. He's a great solo performer and a heck of a songwriter, too. So, don't miss him.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
