Goody Gourmets opened in 2006 at 4425 N. Oakland Ave., but it was a surprise venture, as Molly Snyder reported in 2013.
Owner Jackie Chesser, who worked for 20 years as a finance professional at a large Milwaukee company, was looking at a nearby apartment for a friend when she spotted the space for lease in 2006.
Today, its popcorn is a Milwaukee mainstay and with a second location at 6913 W. Brown Deer Rd. Goody Gourmets does a strong business with lines out the door many weekends.
I’m a huge fan of Goody’s Triple Mix (cheese, caramel and regular popcorn) and in the store at least three or four times a month. So, I was a bit taken back when I stopped yesterday and saw it closed. No need to worry, though, the space is just getting a facelift and ripping out some old carpet. The popcorn, in all of its amazingness, will remain the same.
Here's what Cheeser told me via text today. "When we opened our Shorewood location ten years ago, I wanted something cozy like the appearance and feel of home. We wanted our customers to feel like they were visiting family."
"We still want our customers to get that feeling, but with a more updated look. The green monster is the name we gave the carpet in the front entrance. Sorry, it has to go!"
"One of the biggest questions people ask is are our two locations the same company. We did some rebranding when we opened our second location and want the Shorewood location to reflect our new brand as well," concluded Cheeser.
Goody Gourmet will reopen its Shorewood location on Monday, Jan. 30.
A life-long and passionate community leader and Milwaukeean, Jeff Sherman is a co-founder of OnMilwaukee.
