Ald. Mike McGee, Jr. announced today that he is offering a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver responsible for hitting and killing 12-year-old Melissa Bavier last night in the 1600 block of West Locust Street.

"It's very disturbing to me that we have individuals in our community who believe they can drive with reckless disregard for public safety -- like our laws somehow don't apply to them -- and commit murder," he said.

The suspect vehicle is described as an older possible GM Buick or Oldsmobile, possibly blue, green or teal, with tinted windows and chrome wheels.

McGee and Magic Foods, a neighborhood grocery store at 16th and Locust, are funding the reward.

Anyone with possible information on the suspect and/or vehicle should call McGee at (414) 286-2994.

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
