Racine's O&H Danish Bakery is dishing up its new holiday kringle Wednesday and hosts a launch event this weekend aimed at helping local kids celebrate the holidays.
The new Christmas Fudge Kringle was inspired by the popular Ohhhh Fudge! Layer Cake, the name of which is a nod to the classic “A Christmas Story” film.
When they first made the new kringle, the O&H team thought "Ohhhh, fudge! that cake tastes amazing!"
A flaky kringle dough is wrapped around housemade dark chocolate fudge and then frosted with chocolate icing and sprinkled with red, green and white nonpareils. How could that be any good, right?
As part of the launch, O&H hosts a Tex Reynolds’ Toys for Tots Drive on Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at its Washington Avenue location, (5910 Washington Ave. in Mount Pleasant.
Please bring new, unwrapped toys, games, puzzles, sporting goods and the link for children ages 0-10 years old.
While you're there, pose for professional photos with Santa and an Elf helper on Santa’s sleigh. Free download codes will be provided to access the online gallery.
“Just like Ralphie in ‘A Christmas Story,’ we know how much children look forward to presents on Christmas morning. As another nod to the classic film, we thought the best way to celebrate the Christmas Fudge Kringle is to bring that joy to children in the Racine area by partnering with Tex Reynolds’ Toys for Tots,” says Eric Olesen, the third-generation co-owner of the Racine, Wisconsin-based bakery.
“We are proud members of this generous community and are thrilled to be a part of families’ celebrations across the country through our Kringle and other desserts.”
The Christmas Fudge Kringle is now available in stores and online until Dec. 31.
Due to holiday demand, O&H is busy cranking out as many as 7,000 kringles a day.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
