In an unexpected message shared Tuesday on Facebook, Karen Krieg, owner of Lakeside Bakery (formerly Canfora Bakery) announced that, effective Jan. 9, they would be closing the longtime bakery at 1100 E. Oklahoma Ave.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share that the retail store for Lakeside Bakery will be closing for business effective today, Tuesday, January 9th.

This was not an easy decision to make as we understand how much of a staple the bakery has been to many families throughout Milwaukee and the surrounding area over the past one hundred years of the bakery's standing. We are thankful for having had the opportunity to carry on the memories and the traditions, and we deeply cherish all of the smiling faces we've met along the way.

Thank you, Bay View for the opportunity to serve this beautiful community- you will all be missed dearly.”

Canfora Bakery got its start in 1981 when Calogero and Rosalba Canfora opened the bakery on 25th and Burnham. In 1994, the bakery moved to its current home in the former Lakeside Bakery in 1994.

When the bakery was purchased by Krieg in 2017, the moniker changed to Krieg’s Lakeside Bakery (and eventually simply Lakeside Bakery) as a nod to the longtime bakery that had operated there for decades.

In recent years, Lakeside Bakery was best known for its hot ham and rolls, oversized doughnuts and seasonal paczki offered in flavors like raspberry, lemon, apple, prune, custard and blueberry.  It's a Bay View staple that will surely be missed.
