{image1} East North Avenue will experience a dramatic -- and relaxing -- change with the arrival of The Lava Lounge in the spring.

Formerly The Globe at 2028 E. North Ave., The Lava Lounge will transform the former music venue into a soothing, intimate restaurant/bar happening. Despite the name, there will be no lava lamps.

"We feel that the lounge will appeal to a number of different age groups," co-manager Jeremy Voss says. "We believe it will be a relaxing atmosphere for everyone. The décor will make patrons feel very welcome and very comfortable. We'll have sort of a mood setting atmosphere."

Voss says his targeted market includes 21- to 65-year-olds of diverse backgrounds who will appreciate a good meal, a warm lounge setting and stimulating environment.

The menu will include a wide selection of appetizers -- 13 in all, a variety of sandwiches and burgers, and an assortment of salads and wraps. Voss expects to introduce three or four entrees, too.

However, Voss points out that his first priority will be the renovation of the establishment, scheduled to begin within the month.

"We're looking at renovating everything," he says. "We're looking at taking the whole front end of the building off and rebuilding it. We're adding a kitchen to the back of the building. The renovation process should take us one or two months to complete, with a target date of opening on March 1, 2004."

The new façade will consist mostly of glass to reveal the intimate setting to be created in the interior, Voss says. The current bar will be moved to accommodate additional seating.

"The bar is currently in the center of the building," he says. "We're going to move it off to the side for more space. It'll be up against the wall, so the entire side of the wall will be the back bar."

Local microbrews, import and domestic beers and mixed drinks will be served. Non-alcoholic choices will also be available.

The overhaul will include an existing mezzanine level with a few trimmings. A balcony that extends off the front of the building will be stylish, draw attention and allow for more outdoor seating.

"We're excited about our plans for the balcony," Voss says. "The current mezzanine will be redone for better head clearance but then we plan to have a casual outdoor dining area that will extend to the front of the establishment onto a balcony."

Voss is joined by Josh Krish as The Lava Lounge's full time managers. Krish has management experience from "The American Club" in Kohler, where he was a Banquet Department assistant. He has worked in the restaurant industry for over six years and currently holds a management position at Bally Total Fitness, where Voss also works.

The Lava Lounge, when completed, should add to the mix of eating establishments along East North Avenue. And with the facelift to the building, it'll certainly spice up the block.

"It'll look like nothing else around there," Voss promises.
