I live in the Sixth District, and I can’t say I am surprised that Ald. Michael McGee, Jr. advanced from the primary to the April elections despite the fact he’s in jail. I am not making any statements about McGee’s alleged behavior, however, as a mother I am bothered by the prospect of having an incarcerated representative.
Despite the trappings of poverty, isn’t every mother in this district hoping her kids stay out of prison? I know I am.
Again, whether McGee is guilty or innocent is not the point. Whether or not he deserves to be in jail is not the point. The fact is, our alderman -- a role model in the community -- is in jail. If an inmate represents the Sixth District, aren’t we telling the kids -- specifically the kids in the sixth district -- that they can still have power and success from prison?
