Milwaukee movie fans, rejoice! The best two weeks of the calendar year are back, as the 2023 Milwaukee Film Festival is back on a big screen near you April 20 through May 4. For ticket and pass info, click here – and we'll see you at the movies!
The upcoming festival season is beginning to take shape, with the Big Gig and State Fair announcing music headliners and Jazz in the Park revealing its summer dates. That includes the 2023 Milwaukee Film Festival as well, which revealed the first selection from its upcoming showcase slate: Fritz Lang's iconic 1927 silent movie masterpiece "Metropolis" complete with live accompaniment.
For those who haven't seen the still-influential silent film, "Metropolis" dives into the world of a technologically advanced future society with a class struggle on the verge of breaking out – all told with mesmerizing, mind-blowing visuals that still seem impossible almost a century after its original release.
For those who missed "Metropolis" when it played previous Milwaukee Film Festivals in 2010 and 2016, you've been given a bonus mulligan to see this classic on the big screen – so don't miss out again. And for those who have seen "Metropolis," this MFF screening promises to be unlike any other as it comes with musical accompaniment from The Anvil Orchestra, providing the film's score live at the Oriental Theatre. The Anvil Orchestra features multiple members of The Alloy Orchestra, the renowned film accompanist group that previously played alongside memorable screenings of Alfred Hitchcock's "Blackmail," the essential early documentary "Man with a Movie Camera" and more before disbanding in 2021.
"Metropolis" is just the first of dozens upon dozens upon dozens of remarkable movies and shorts coming audiences' way thanks to the Milwaukee Film Festival, running this year from April 20 through May 4. Ticket packages and passes are currently available at Milwaukee Film's website – and you'll want to get in on those now, because prices will increase on Wednesday, March 1.
For more information on the 2023 Milwaukee Film Festival and the Oriental's other awesome movie programming – currently including the Oscar-nominated shorts, classic family films back on the big screen and special showings of "Jeanne Dielman" and "Roma" – check out Milwaukee Film's website. And stay tuned to OnMilwaukee for more festival updates.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
