Mitchell Street Arts (MiSA), 710 W. Historic Mitchell St., will open in August on the ground floor of the Kunzelmann Esser Lofts building and offer Milwaukeeans a new makerspace, public stage, residencies, mentorships, event space, classes and workshops.
The MiSA website reads:
"Our central purpose is to make bridges: to utilize art as a vehicle for cross cultural connection. We do this by collaborating with community organizations and artist groups from around the city. Our stage hosts interactive theater troupes, spoken word poetry, open mic nights, community dialogues and more. Programming is multi-lingual and take place in Spanish, English and Arabic.
In addition to hosting performing arts, our makerspace contains a wood shop, ceramics studio, photo darkroom and more. It is a place for professional artists to collaborate, and a classroom for our community to learn new skills. Through an artist-in-residence program focused on public art, we provide free studio space and gallery time to local artists."
A grand opening celebration is planned for Friday, Aug. 18 from 6 to 10 p.m.
The first group of Artists in Residence was recently named. Mikal Floyd-Pruitt, Nohemí Chávez and Jovanny Hernandez Caballero, Bill Walker and Fanana Banana will begin their residencies on Aug. 25, 2023.
“The artists in this cohort bring a unique collective voice to the space and I can’t wait to see what they create,” says Nicole Acosta, MiSA's Creative Events Director.
The Mitchell Street Arts’ TWIG and NEST residencies provide artists from around Milwaukee and around the world with dedicated time, space and resources to create new works, experiment and conduct research. The programs promote the sharing of ideas and relationship building between local and non-local artists. The residency is open to visual, sound and interdisciplinary artists.
“Our aim is to provide an inclusive support structure for socially engaged artists that encompasses physical space, mentorship and networking opportunities. While open to all visual artists, the program has a soft focus on increasing public art in the city," says Rew Gordon, MiSA’s Executive Director.
