"Scream VI." A new "John Wick." The animated "Super Mario Bros." The movie schedule across the next few months is filled up with big names – but if you live anywhere in and around Milwaukee, the biggest name is the Milwaukee Film Festival, which will return to screens across the city for two glorious weeks starting April 20. And for those who weren't already hyped, the festival announced two more early selections for its 2023 lineup: a pair of cult classics with "The Doom Generation" and "Losing Ground."

The first new repertory selection is the uncensored director's cut of "The Doom Generation," writer-director Gregg Araki's ("Mysterious Skin," Smiley Face") 1995 underground favorite about a trio of disaffected misfits (Rose McGowan, James Duval and Johnathan Schaech) on a misanthropic road trip of violence, sex and discovery through a borderline-apocalyptic America. The movie received polarizing reviews back in its initial release (coming out in the shadow of the superficially similar "Natural Born Killers" just the year prior didn't help) but has continued to grow a cult following over time – and now it's returning in its original form first seen at its raucous Sundance debut almost 30 years ago. 

The other newly revealed Milwaukee Film Festival throwback selection is "Losing Ground," Kathleen Collins' 1982 acclaimed and newly restored melodrama about a married couple crumbling apart over the course of a summer vacation. The film – one of the first directed by an African American woman – was mostly overlooked in its time, never given a proper theatrical release beyond film festivals, but thanks to recent restorations, "Losing Ground" has finally found its audience and claimed its place in history, getting selected to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 2020. 

"The Doom Generation" and "Losing Ground" join fellow repertory pick "Metropolis" in the Milwaukee Film Festival's 2023 slate, announced as the event's first revealed selection last month.
