While kids look forward to a possible snow day, us grown-ups (most of us, at least) in the "real world," don't get the luxury of frolicking in a winter wonderland when snow starts hitting the area.

The best advice, of course, is to stay put. If you're able to even get out of your driveway or garage (and you haven't been towed...), driving around in a blizzard isn't the best idea.

If you do have to travel Tuesday or Wednesday, use extreme caution. Much of Southeast Wisconsin will be affected by the storm, leaving many roads dangerous or even impassable.

You can monitor road conditions at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Drivers Information Website, 511wi.gov.

Milwaukee Police Department spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz, in an e-mail to media members Monday, reminded citizens that there are "no snow days at the Milwaukee Police Department."

"We have plans in place to get essential personnel to their respective work locations," Schawrtz said. "We have equipped all our squad cars with chains for the tires."

If you are involved in an accident, keep the following in mind:

  • Only call 911 if there are injuries involved.
  • If there are no injuries and no need for medical attention, get the vehicles out of traffic and exchange information in a safe location. Be sure to include name, address, phone numbers, license numbers, insurance info, make, model and plate numbers.
  • You can report an accident in person at any Milwaukee Police station within 48 hours of the accident.
  • If you want a squad to respond, call the non-emergency number, (414) 933-4444 but be prepared to wait as squads may need extra time to get to you due to the conditions.
