Earlier this month, there was plenty of hair-pulling and ship-abandoning about the news that Disney will pull its movies off of Netflix to start its own streaming service. Today, however, served as a handy, calming reminder that we're a long ways away from that happening (through the end of next year, to be exact).
Netflix announced its upcoming slate of movies for the month of September and – go figure – there's a solid crew of Disney classics, new and old, still en route to the Great Red Streaming Monolith. Beloved animated hits like "Hercules," "Mulan" and "Pocahontas" will all come to the streaming platform, as well as this year's blockbuster smash live-action "Beauty and the Beast" update. So no worries, Disney devotees; Netflix is still the place to find your Mouse House favorites ... for now.
And now for the complete polar opposite of a Disney film: "Requiem for a Dream." Darren Aronofsky's harrowing narcotics drama is Netflix bound to scare you off of ever doing drugs or even just watching movies and TV shows about drugs ... which is poor timing for the streaming service, because season three of the DEA drama "Narcos" will also arrive in September. And while we're on the topic of terrific movies from great directors, "Pulp Fiction," "Gangs of New York," "Jaws," "The Squid and the Whale" and "Carol" are all coming to Netflix.
There's also "Deep Blue Sea," which is neither a terrific movie nor from a great director, but it does contain this scene:
Take that, "Jaws."
Meanwhile, on the Originals side of things, comedy is king in the month of September, with two stand-up specials from beloved iconic comedians – Jerry Seinfeld and Marc Maron – making their premieres, as well as season four of "BoJack Horseman." Finally, to wrap up the month and get you ready for Halloween, the service will premiere "Gerald's Game," a new Stephen King adaptation from underrated horror director Mike Flanagan ("Oculus," "Ouija 2"). And considering how many classic frights are bailing from the website next month, you may need all the horror options you can get for October.
Here's the rest of what's coming to Netflix in September.

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
