The votes are in, and the Milwaukee Ballet's performance of "The Nutcracker" is clearly a winner.

The strength of this year's show stems from the brilliant choreography of Lisa de Ribere, who finally mastered the task in her third season with the company. She signs and seals her capabilities with the graceful, breathtaking "Snowflake Forest" scene.

Although five years old, Zack Brown's sets are still vibrant and create a fantastic Christmas fairyland on the super-sized stage.

Tchaikovsky's music, as always, is familiar but still a delicious treat. Another sweet surprise is the playful humor sprinkled into the scenes, especially the party scene. Magic tricks are also a part of the mix, so be prepared for a lot of simultaneous activity.

Luckily, the timing is perfect, sparing the audience from going into overload. Rather, this season's "Nutcracker" is as splendid and magical as you remember it.

"The Nutcracker" runs through Sun. Dec. 29 at Marcus Center Uilein Hall. Call (414) 643-7677 for tickets.
