{image1}Georgia O'Keeffe's work is some of the most recognizable, popular and beloved American art and her recent show which helped launch the Calatrava-designed addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum was proof of that. So, you can't blame MAM for sticking with a good thing sometimes.
Starting Thurs., Sept. 4, all of the museum's 14 paintings by O'Keeffe, a Sun Prairie native, will be on permanent display in the Bradley Galleries. At the start, there will also be a pair of photographic portraits of O'Keeffe by her husband, landmark photographer Alfred Stieglitz. About a month later, those photographs will be replaced with a pair of O'Keeffe paintings loaned to the museum.
The exhibit coincides with the return of many of the works from the acclaimed "O'Keeffe's O'Keeffe's," which traveled to other cities after it opened in Milwaukee in 2001.
Milwaukee Art Museum has the fourth-largest collection of works by O'Keeffe. The museum also owns eight works on paper that will not be included in the permanent exhibit.
"Having all of the paintings on view in the same gallery for the first time really allows people to see the strength and depth of our O'Keeffe collection," said MAM Director and CEO David Gordon.
The collection was built on a cache of O'Keeffe canvases donated by Mrs. Harry Lynde Bradley. When the museum opened its 1975 addition, O'Keeffe visited, helping to cement the relationship. Twenty-odd years later, 10 additional works were gifted to the museum by the Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation and Jane Bradley Pettit, Bradley's daughter.
Milwaukee Art Museum is located at 700 N. Art Museum Dr. Call (414) 224-3200 for admission and other information.
