Impressive new tunes, temporary digs, a slick new beauty gadget and a "spirited" version of that certain heavenly breakfast meat. All this and more awaits you in this week's OnMilwaukee.com Recommends.
Bakon Vodka – Like many of you, I love me some bacon. But, like bacon-covered chocolate on a stick, I'm not sure that straight-up Bakon Vodka – made by Black Rock Spirits – is twice as good as the original flavor on its own. In a shot glass, you get almost pure bacon on the nose and the mouth feel is smooth and warm. But better is to use Bakon Vodka in a mixer, especially a savory Bloody Mary, with which the smoky bacon marries well. You can try the distillers' own recipe at bakonvodka.com. – Bobby Tanzilo
Renting a cabin in winter – I recently stayed in a cozy, well-maintained cabin on Lake Michigan during one of the few snowy weekends we've had in Wisconsin. The small, rustic cabin is located in Oostburg (near Sheboygan) and was built in the 1930s. It has a spectacular view, full kitchen, large fireplace and two bedrooms – one with a double bed and one with bunk beds and a pull-out couch. I was a little leery about winter cabin-ing, wondering if we'd have enough to do indoors, but we had a great time both indoors and out: sledding on the beach, cooking, latch-hooking, game playing and reading on a bench next to a huge window overlooking the lake. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Kohler Design Center, good restaurants and antique shops were all available to us, but we didn't find it necessary to leave the property. Debra Brehmer has owned the place for 18 years and she rents it out throughout the year. Email her for more information at debrabrehm@aol.com.– Molly Snyder
Sharon Van Etten – Tramp (Jagjaguwar) – It's been fascinating watching Brooklyn-based songstress Sharon Van Etten grow from record to record, transforming from someone who appeared onstage so timid that it seemed that she'd almost been forced from bedroom studio to rock club. It'd be tempting to say that the "Tramp" – which manages the odd balancing act of maintaining SVE's quiet persona and lo-fi aesthetic and sound absolutely and triumphantly confident and lush – is her masterwork. But as satisfying and powerful as it is, thanks to the stark "Give Out," the eerie melody of "Magic Chords" and the almost loping, carnival vibe of the "Leonard," "Tramp" feels more like a reminder that SVE is constantly evolving and growing and that her masterwork is still around the corner. In the meantime, this record is pretty darn close. – Bobby Tanzilo
Red Stag Honey Highball – I've yet to master whiskey, but Jim Beam's Red Stag Honey Tea bourbon whiskey might help me out. It's the main ingredient in the Honey Highball, which combines 1.5 ounces of the Honey Tea with ginger ale and optional bitters. The end result is mildly sweet and thankfully more honey than tea. And, with a definite whiskey kick, it's a more flavorful introduction to a quick-mix whiskey drink. – Renee Lorenz
Clarisonic – When I was sent the cult favorite Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing System, I knew I would love the motorized deep-cleansing gadget heralded for its ability to "remove 6x more makeup and 2x more dirt and oil than manual cleansing alone." What I didn't know was that its companion, the Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System with Anti-Aging Sea Serum, would steal my heart. This sleek device comes with everything you need to defeat crow's feet or other stubborn creases on your visage. The Opal uses the combination of sonic infusion with their powerful, marine extract serum to avenge lines and wrinkles. Dispense the paraben-free serum onto the infusion tip and apply the powered-up Opal to the area you wish to treat. Each area gets a quick and effective 30-second treatment. The lines around my eyes have softened dramatically and the valley that had taken up residence between my brows is vastly improved. You can use the Opal around the mouth and on lips, on the forehead and brow area too! Clarisonic offers a 90-day money back guarantee, so either you love it or you return it. Check out the website for more ideas for using the Opal and to purchase. – Lindsay Garric
