Third Space Brewing plans to launch a new collaboration beer for a good cause in October. One in Four IPA aims to raise funds to help combat and boost awareness of domestic violence.

The brewery will share the label art and beer recipe with other craft brewers who are willing to make the beer and donate profits to fight domestic violence.

“We chose this staggering statistic for the name of the beer to help start conversations within local communities about the prevalence of domestic violence,” says Third Space's Lead Brewer Matt Cisz, who spearheaded the One In Four project.

“When you lose a family member to domestic violence, all you want to do is find a way to prevent it from happening to anyone else."

Cisz’s own family has been touched by the tragedy of domestic violence and he is the driving force behind the new brew. The name of the beer refers to the fact that, according to the CDC, one in four women has experienced domestic violence in some form.

“Our goal is to draw attention to the prevalence of domestic violence in our communities and to raise funds for prevention,” he says.

Third Space is encouraging brewers who make the beer to donate profits to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence or to a local group combating domestic violence.

Third Space will donate all its profits from One In Four sales Sojourner, Wisconsin's largest nonprofit provider of domestic violence prevention and intervention services.

The beer, which Third Space hopes will be picked up and brewed by others all around the country – a la Black is Beautiful, All Together IPA and Things We Don't Say – will be released in October to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, says Cisz.

Malteurop, Yakima Chief Hops and Blue Label Packaging are offering discounts to brewers making One in Four. Label artwork was created Josh VandenAvond, who is the senior graphic designer at Company B, a Milwaukee PR firm.

"We are lucky to have great industry partners," says Cisz. Malteurop which provides a large portion of the malts that go into our flagship Happy Place, just came out with a new malt called Munich 5L. It is a lighter munich malt that provides depth without the intensity that traditional munich can have at times. Malteurop will be providing a discount on all malts used in this project.

"Yakima Chief Hops has been a long standing supplier of ours for years. While most beer consumers have tasted beers that use Simcoe and Idaho 7 hops, we are also using a newer experimental variety called HBC 630 in this collaboration beer. It has really intense berry and dark fruit notes that I think will compliment a fall release in October and make it pretty unique."

The recipe for the beer is a new one, created especially for this project.

“NCADV is honored to partner with Third Space Brewing in launch of One in Four to help raise funds and generate conversations within local communities about domestic violence,” says Ruth M. Glenn, CEO of NCADV. “People who abuse their partners use any tactic they can to control their victims and keep them from leaving.

"For the majority of victims, that makes safe escape extremely difficult, and far too many victims are killed by their abusers in that process. Encouraging conversations at local levels about domestic violence and how to best support someone being abused by their partner is a critical step in creating safe options for those being abused. It can, quite literally, help save lives.”
