Some friends who attended the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers / Pearl Jam show the other night in St. Paul gave us a couple clues into what might happen during Summerfest shows Thursday and Friday night at the Marcus Amphitheater.

First, the Pearl Jam set rocks. Eddie Vedder and the boys played about 85 minutes the other night, slamming through some old favorites as well as new songs that were well received.

Petty also mixes in some new material from his latest album "Highway Companion," but also sticks to radio staples like the show-opening "Listen to her Heart" and "Free Fallin'."

Our spies tell us that Vedder joined the Heartbreakers onstage for a show-closing rendition of "American Girl." Given that Elvis Costello is playing next door tonight at the Briggs and Stratton Big Backyard, you have to wonder if opening night of the Big Gig will close with a Petty-Vedder-Elvis sighting.

Stay tuned.
