Most likely, it isn’t going to bring out hordes of rollicking partiers like that other holiday happening this week, but today is Pi Day which is a day of celebration for math geeks and pastry lovers alike.
Pi – which is the "ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter" (feel free to reread that a few times like I had to) – is approximated as 3.14, even though the number actually goes on for infinity without repeating any numbers.
I took college algebra twice; however, I like to think I passed on a recessive math gene to my son, who took it upon himself to memorize the first 100 numbers of pi "just for fun." Hence, for the first year, Pi Day is on my radar and so I looked around Milwaukee to find out ways to celebrate it. There’s also this website that’s chockfull of nerd-o-rific info about the day.
Here are nine ways to celebrate Pi Day here in Brew City, not all of which require a fork.
1. Baker’s Square – All pies are $2 off. (We plan on eating slices of French silk from Baker’s Square for dinner.)
2. Blaze Pizza – All 11-inch, personal pan pizzas are $3.14 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
3. Front Room Photography Party – Front Room is having its fifth annual Pi Day Party from 5 to 10 p.m. on Monday night featuring pie, snacks, drinks, an apple pie contest and a photobooth. More here.
4. Honeypie – According to an employee, Honeypie plans to "sell a whole lotta pie" on Pi Day. Honeypie is also a sponsor in the Pi Day Fun Run. (See below.)
5. Outpost Natural Foods – A small coffee and a slice of pie (apple, blueberry or coconut cream) is $3.14 at all Outpost locations.
6. Perkins – All Perkins restaurants are giving away a free slice of pie on Pi Day with the purchase of an entree.
7. Pi Day Fun Run – Looking to burn calories rather than consume them today? This fun run at Performance Running Outfitters might just fit your needs.
8. Pizza Hut is hosting an online math contest developed by mathematician John H. Conway with an award of 3.14 years of free pizza. Go here to find out more or to enter.
9. Whole Foods – Both Whole Foods locations are offering fruit pies for $6.14, regularly $9.99, all day in the bakery department.
