In July, Domino’s Pizza gave 20 cities, including Milwaukee, $5,000 to help with pothole repairs. Domino’s says the publicity stunt was in their best interest because potholes can affect the smoothness of a delivery and potentially lead to a less-than-perfect pizza.
Milwaukee received the gift after 2nd District Alderman Cavalier Johnson saw an ad on TV announcing Domino's pothole plan.
Earlier this week, OnMilwaukee checked in with Johnson to find out if "Operation Pizza Potholes" was completed. Indeed, it was.
"The money received from Domino's was mixed with our regular spending on tons of asphalt that we use on a daily basis to fill potholes. So technically, virtually every pothole that has been filled recently is a 'pizza pothole,'" says Johnson.
According to Sandy Rusch Walton, the communications manager for the City of Milwaukee, about 200 potholes were filled from the Domino’s donation.
"The DPW uses about 40 tons of asphalt. The cost per ton for asphalt is approximately $100, so $5,000 would buy approximately 50 tons of asphalt," says Rusch Walton. "And we estimate that 50 tons of asphalt would be enough to fill 200 potholes."
