Welcome to Sunday Scorecard, a day later than normal and dedicated to all the wonderful moms out there in appreciation for all the love, laundry, late dinners, lullabies, lunches, hugs, encouragement and chocolate chip cookies. Since my own mother is a Larry King fan, the guy with the suspenders is taking over the bulk of the proceedings today. Happy Mother's Day, everyone.
Jody, Jody, Jody: It's not every day that the Brewers score 17 runs. (That seemingly happens every other day). And, it's not every day that a player hits for the cycle.
Jody Gerut accomplished the feat during a 17-3 victory over Arizona Saturday night at Chase Field. Gerut, playing because Carlos Gomez was sidelined with a shoulder injury, became the sixth player in Brewers franchise history to hit a single, double, triple and homer in the same game.
The others? Mike Hegan, Charlie Moore, Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and Chad Moeller.
Though there are two Hall of Famers in that club, and several other team's all-time cycle rosters, hitting the cycle is regarded by many as a statistical fluke. It occurs slightly more often than a no-hitter, but it doesn't speak to a player's skill.
Interestingly, the only teams without a cycle in their history are Florida and San Diego.

The Brewers have scored 11 or more runs six times. They've scored seven or more 11 times. And, they've scored two runs or fewer nine times... How do you figure these guys?... So, LaTroy Hawkins really was hurt. He's on the DL and Mitch Stetter is coming up from the minors... You've got to read "The Bullpen Gospels" by Dirk Hayhurst. It just might be the best baseball book since the legendary "Ball Four."... I don't know about you, but I' getting a little excited about the World Cup... You can warm up for the soccer action by listening to "Soccer Saturday" on 540 ESPN. Excellent show hosted by up-and-comer Matt Salmon... Speaking of baseball books, Howard Bryant's new biography of Hank Aaron reveals that the Hammer didn't have a warm relationship with Willie Mays. That's not a shock. People who work for the Giants often describe the Say Hey kid as a somewhat cantankerous figure... You've got to hand it to those Atlanta Hawks. Nice showing in Round 2. Clearly, Josh Smith found too much to do in Orlando. Have fun with that coaching search... Which former state college player would you rather have suit up for the Bucks -- Marcus Landry or Wes Matthews, Jr.? Discuss... The Brewers are 10-3 in their last 13 games at Chase Field. Obviously, they feel at home there after spending nearly two months in Phoenix during spring training... Detroit got multi-homer games from Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila on Tuesday and still scored only four runs. The last team to do that, according to Elias Sports Bureau, was the Brewers, who saw Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper each hit a pair of homers in a 5-4, 11-inning loss to Seattle on May 31, 1982... University of Washington senior Danielle Lawrie, whose brother, Brett, is a Brewers second base prospect and former top draft pick, threw her fourth no-hitter of the season for the top-ranked Huskies in a 8-0 victory over Stanford. Maybe the Crew should give her a look?.. It's good to see Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers getting involved with the MACC Fund. Golfer Mark Wilson has done some heavy lifting for the charity in recent years and it'd be great is some of the players from local pro teams would help out, too... Packers top draft pick Bryan Bulaga tweeted his review of "Iron Man 2" on Saturday night: "Had its ups and downs but overall a solid flick," he said... You had to know that "Shogun" was going to kick some booty... Was that really Henry Blanco hitting a walkoff homer for the Mets?... That Saints Vicodin story just gets weirder and weirder. The local angles stem from the fact that Joe Vitt is a former Packers assistant and Sean Payton was considered a candidate for the Green Bay job that went to Mike McCarthy... Is Starlin Castro the next big thing or just another product of the Cubs' hype machine?... When I heard that Marquette signed a 300-pound guy, I wondered if JaMarcus Russell had eligibility left to play college hoops. Let's hope Davante Gardner experiences a better outcome...
