There are a lot of places in Milwaukee to celebrate Mardi Gras this year, but one of the best is Big Daddy’s Brew & Que.
The restaurant, located in Bayshore Town Center, hosts a big Mardi Gras celebration from Vendredi (Friday) Feb. 27 through Mardi (Tuesday), March 4.
In addition to live music by the Stubby Chubbz Brass Band on Fat Tuesday itself, the event will feature a New Orleans-style menu and some specialty cocktails by master mixologist Adam Seger.
We asked Seger for a preview of some of those cocktails and here’s what he shared.
Big Daddy’s Hurricane
Nothing says "Laissez Les Bonnes Tempes Roulez" like a New Orleans Hurricane from Big Daddy's," said Seger. "With three kinds of Rum and easy to drink fruit juices, it will get you in the Mardi Gras mood in no time."
- 1 ounce dark rum
- 1 ounce light rum
- 1 ounce pomegranate juice
- 1 ounce passion fruit syrup
- 1 ounce pineapple juice
- 1 ounce lime juice
- 1 ounce orange juice
Serve over ice in a tall glass to 3/4 full. Top with Ginger ale. Garnish with mint, pineapple wedge, orange slice and a cherry.
Big Daddy’s Sweet Tea Lemonade
"Sweet Tea Lemonade is as quintessential south as it gets, but spike it with some booze and you know it's Mardi Gras time," Seger said.
- Fill a mason jar with ice
- Add 1.5 ounce Death’s Door White Whiskey
- Add 1.5 ounce honey syrup (whisked honey with a touch of hot water)
- Fill with equal parts Earl Grey iced tea and fresh lemonade
- Garnish with mint sprig and lemon wheel
- 3/4 ounce Hum (Hibiscus-ginger rum)
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
