Welcome to a weekly segment called "Social Circle." It's a group effort between readers, social networkers and the OnMilwaukee.com editors. The Social Circle was on both sides of the fence this week. Some found it fun and fitting to provide pets with presents, others said it was wasteful and / or absurd.

What are your thoughts? Have you or would you buy a gift for a non-human?

Jill Albers: "Why not? They're much more appreciative than the teenagers on my gift list!"

Carol Ann Barto: "Instead of baking X-mas cookies, I bake dog biscuits and give them to all of the dogs / dog owners I know."

Frank Datzer: "They never get me anything!"

Diane Dowland: "I buy a lot of presents for the kids in my family and every Christmas I get nothing because my ovaries prevented me from the ability to breed. You just inspired me to have a Christmas list for my dog ready for when I get everyone's kids' lists."

Kay Erickson Ehlers: "Ridonkulous."

Abigail Lynn Fowler: "Mandatory. New dog bed, blanket and squeaky duck every X-mas."

Neil Frickson: "I'm buying my cat a ton of new shirts size 16 1/2 - 36 - 37. Hope they fit!"

Kent Knapp: "While we don't buy any presents (we make them all so not to support consumerism at this time of year), we do usually get the dogs a big bone or something. One year I made them custom, copper 'dog tags' with name and phone number for when they sneak out of the yard."

Tammy Kolbe: "I always did."

Dan Krass: "I always have. My cat goes nuts when I sprinkle some catnip inside the paper of whatever it is I bought him."

Jackie Valent Lucca: "Love my doggie so yes, he gets gifts."

Milinda Lee Mueller: "If I had a dog I'd probably buy a large bone as a distraction from all the present opening, but otherwise they get enough presents as it is!"

Sheila Neumann: "Our dog, Lucy, loves opening presents. The crinkling sound of the wrapping paper and the new toy or treats inside! Part of our holiday fun!"

Caroline Oberle: "It's a must, my cat is my human child! I also get gifts for my parents' dog, my in-laws' dog and my neighbors' pets."

Jeff Pawlinski: "I'd buy my dog a Christmas gift but he's Jewish, and my cat is a Muslim, so I get out cheap."

Christina Poth: "When I had a dog, I used to just wrap toys he already had. He liked tearing up the paper, but didn't care if the toys were new."

Maria Holden Raboin: "We (I) do it every year. We have two dogs and three cats. I buy little cat nip toys for the cats and prairie dog antlers for the dogs. I love them just as much as any of my human gift recipients (sometimes more), so why not?"

Joanne Sablich: "Yep. Little useful gifts. This year a new scratching pole, a new toy and some treats."

Joe Sorge: "Do it every year!"

David Strong: "A waste of money!"

Carrie Torres: "Yes. I did 10 years for my retriever. It was the highlight of my X-mas. I wrapped each gift and he opened them with his paws and teeth. He deserved each and every one."

Ruth Weill: "I think if young children want to buy their pet a gift then OK, but otherwise you are just doing it for your own gratification."

Tami Yoghourtjian- Scheehle: "They are my friends and love me no matter what. They deserve something extra special, too."
