The "Social Circle" is a group effort between readers, social networkers and the OnMilwaukee.com editors. Every Monday, we ask a question via Facebook and Twitter and then post the responses from our Facebook "likers" and Twitter followers in this column. Well-known Milwaukee movers and shakers will contribute, too.
There is so much for kids to see and do at the State Fair, from animal viewing to cream puff eating to riding rides in SpinCity.
However, many people report they started enjoying the fair more as a grownup than they did as a kid or young adult. We asked the Social Circle if they could relate to this and many of them could.
How about you? Are you a late-blooming fair lover? What about the fair do you appreciate later in life?
Sarah Berg: "I don't have kids, but I certainly love the fair a ton more now than I did when I was little!"
Lisa Bergman: "This is the first year I've actually had a totally great time with my daughter who is now 10."
Annie Superfly Callahan: "I love the beer!"
Monica Freitag: "Yes. It's always been a family tradition with my parents when we were kids. We never missed a year. So when I had my two I started taking them. Now ages almost 17 and almost 20 they took off work to go with me tomorrow. Tradition that we kept going. We have a great time. It's changed over the years, no more pony rides, but now it's enjoying other things."
Deone Jahnke: "I went three years ago with my friend and we spent hours in the chicken barn. Chickens are beautiful. I have a brand new appreciation for the fair."
Curt Kasprzak: "It’s great seeing how happy the kids are."
Jennifer LaPorte McCanles: "Nothing like watching a giddy kid under the glow of the midway lights (after dragging them through the swine barn, because it's State Fair, damn it!)"
Shannon Matthews: "Kids for sure made me love the fair more as an adult."
Ardith Richter: "Great memories of the fair in the 1950s and ‘60s with my granddad and pop and the racing my mare in the short chute. Then, in 1991 with my Melanie and she found a small pin with ‘Ardith’ on it. I treasure it so much. I’m 63 now Melanie is 40. I miss those days so much. But now I go with my hubby."
Terra Scott: "There is a different enjoyment between the two. Obviously, party time and beer when you don't have kids. But taking your kids to see the animals, slide, food is fun too, I love seeing my little girl happy, but I also love being able to drink beer there!"
Erin Ulicki: "I never really liked the fair until I had kiddos, now I love it!"
Caitlín Zhenotdal: "The older I get, the more fascinating I find the fair. I love people watching. And the beer selection blows away Summerfest’s. Power to the Wisconsin State Fair!"
