{image1} The Milwaukee Department of Public Works will continue streetscape improvements this spring by expanding the project on Wisconsin Avenue from the Milwaukee River to Milwaukee Street. The project will be completed by mid-May.
Initial streetscape improvements began last summer on Wisconsin Avenue from North 2nd Street to North 4th Street. The area received new sidewalks, curbs and granite planters with ornate metalwork as part of Federal Congestion Mitigation/Air Quality Grants to foster a pedestrian-friendly walking environment with corridors connecting activity centers downtown. The first new streetlights, double harp lamps, in this phase will be installed within the coming weeks. The first is expected to be placed at 2nd Street and Wisconsin Avenue.
This next phase of improvements will include textured sidewalks, permanent planters and landscaping, new streetlights, a pedestrian way-finding system, decorative trash cans, distinctive crosswalk treatments, illuminated bus shelters, public art and other pedestrian-friendly amenities. Work will continue into the summer.
Next phases of the project include improvements to East Wisconsin Avenue all the way to Mason Street and eventually the rest of West Wisconsin Avenue up to 9th Street.
