{image1}In its third year, the Summer of Peace Citywide Youth Rally is a youth-led initiative that seeks to unite the community to promote non-violence and positive entertainment. Summer of Peace activities and block parties are held in different Milwaukee neighborhoods throughout the summer.
At this year's rally -- scheduled for the end of July -- Milwaukee youth will deliver their message of peace and unity through dynamic speeches, music, dance, poetry, art exhibits and special speakers, awards and recognitions.
In preparation for the event, the Summer of Peace Initiative is seeking teen leaders to help coordinate this year's rally and block parties. There will be a meeting for those interested on Tuesday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Latino Community Center, 807 S. 14th St.
Teen leaders will help plan, promote and host the event. They will also participate in a Peace Learning workshop as part of the experience.
"We have to involve our young people in real ways if we are going to turn this wave of violence around. It is hard to tear down and destroy when you are encouraged to create and build. The rally is the perfect opportunity for creating outlets and celebrating peace," Tanya Cromartie-Twaddle.
Several agencies will send teen representatives to join the committee. For more information on other Summer of Peace events or to refer a teen leader to the Rally's Youth Leadership Committee, contact Tanya Cromartie-Twaddle at (414) 263-8383, ext. 147.
