When national and international news outlets cover terrorist attacks, it shows their programming nature.
At the time the news unfounded with the attacks in Paris on Wednesday, more people were watching Fox News than any other source. The cable outlet had the most viewers according to a breakdown of the ratings. CNN, on the other hand, had more viewers among key demographics. That meant more adults in the younger 25 to 34 and 25 to 54 were watching CNN than older adults.
While ratings are never the greatest measure of quality broadcasting, it is a good way to compare the preferences people have while making a choice to tune in when details are being reported on following impactful news events.
During the hours of main coverage, Fox had the most viewers every hour. CNN, had the most viewers among younger men and women in the hours of 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., noon to 4 p.m. and primetime where "AC360" with Anderson Cooper got a rare win against "The O’Reilly Factor."
THE WIRE: Speaking of news services, Reuters took a hit of sorts earlier this month. The information firm has been pulling assets together to build its own service as a rival to the Associated Press. Tribune and its six other papers have pulled its content from Reuters and have gone back to the AP.
Steven Schwartz, global managing director of the Reuters news agency, told Rick Edmonds at Poynter in an email the Reuters will still go on with selling information to daily newspapers and other news sources.
"We are grateful for all of the Tribune’s insight and input in the early days to help make the Reuters America service exceptionally strong," Schwartz wrote. And we expect they will be back as a customer sometime down the road."
As Edmonds points out, Reuters with its 50 newspapers as customers has a long way to go to compete with the AP. There are more than 1,400 outlets that subscribe to the Associated Press wires and other services.
