On this day in 1991, early in the first Gulf War, Chicago Stadium hosted the NHL All-Star Game. In keeping with tradition, fans cheered throughout Wayne Messmer's version of the national anthem. The result was a spine-tingling moment in pre-game history.
Few people remember the outcome of the game (11-5 victory for the Campbell Conference) or that Toronto winger Vincent Damphousse scored four goals.
The anthem that day, however, was unforgettable.
