Isaac Hayes, a pillar of Stax Records and soul music in general, died Sunday at his home in Memphis.

Hayes, who was 65, was best known for his soundtrack to the 1971 movie "Shaft," but he also wrote -- with then-partner David Porter -- music for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave. A generation of "South Park" fans will remember him as the voice of "Chef," the school cook and devoted ladies man.
