While much progress has been made in the fight against HIV, the widespread belief that the disease is a problem of the past masks an ugly reality. HIV remains a multifaceted and financially burdensome disease, especially for those with limited resources.
These statistics, as presented by AIDSvu, illustrate the reality right here in Milwaukee. And that reality is the driving force behind Vivent Health’s Make A Promise Gala, which raises critical funds to serve its mission: helping all people with HIV to live their healthiest lives.
While this year’s gala, scheduled for April 4, has already sold out, anyone who'd like to support the effort is encouraged to make a donation at makeapromisegala.com.
Two HIV heroes
It's also newsworthy to note that the event will serve to recognize the profound work of two individuals who have contributed significantly to the eradication of the HIV epidemic in our city.
Gregory León, James Beard-nominated chef and owner of Amilinda, will be given the Courage Award in recognition of his unwavering strength, advocacy and leadership as a person living with HIV. Through his openness about his journey, León has assisted in breaking down stigmas, fostering dialog and inspiring others to join the fight against HIV and AIDS.
Dr. Jeffrey Kelly of the Center for Aids Intervention Research (CAIR) at the Medical College of Wisconsin, will be honored with the Leadership Award for his groundbreaking contributions to HIV prevention, advocacy, and community engagement. He has dedicated his career to developing and implementing innovative behavioral interventions that empower individuals and communities affected by HIV.
You can still make a difference
Vivent Health provides approximately $770,000 per year in medication assistance to patients in Milwaukee, with the majority of funding covering the cost for anti-retroviral medication. Funds raised at Make a Promise directly support this financial assistance, keeping patients healthy and furthering the progress in defeating HIV.
While attending the annual gala is a great way to support this work, you can also make a huge difference by donating directly to Vivent at makeapromisegala.com.
“For many, access to life-saving medical help and viral suppression is financially out of reach, said Margaret Lidstone, Chief Philanthropy & Community Engagement Officer of Vivent Health. “Vivent Health works to remove financial barriers to care, but we can only do so with the philanthropic support of the Milwaukee community.”
