Every Thursday, we send out the great OnMilwaukee Weekend Preview filled with awesome things to do. Some of those awesome things are sports-related; many are not. So every Monday, we recap what happened in the world of Wisconsin sports while you were out doing all those other awesome weekend things.
Friday
Bucks lose to Warriors, 121-112: In the much-hyped rematch between juggernaut Golden State and its surprising kryptonite, the Bucks nearly pulled off another huge upset. Six days after beating the Warriors in Milwaukee and ending their 28-game winning streak, the Bucks led the defending champions for much of the game in Oakland. With some Dubs fans donning 10-18 t-shirts to mock the prophetic 24-1 ones worn by the Cream City Clash, Michael Carter-Williams scored a season-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Splash Brothers (53 points combined between Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson), as Golden State prevailed.
Admirals lose to IceHogs, 6-2: Milwaukee trailed by two goals heading into the third period at the BMO Harris Bradley Center but, thanks to sloppy Rockford play, got three power-play opportunities. Unfortunately for the Admirals, they not only weren’t able to put away any of their chances, they also allowed the IceHogs to score a shorthanded goal and skate off with an easy victory.
Saturday
Admirals beat Moose, 7-5: On a high-octane day at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee scored 61 seconds into the game, and neither team let up on offense. Max Gortz had two goals, and Kevin Fiala had three assists for the fashionable Admirals in the back-and-forth affair, their 16th win in their last 21 games.
Marquette women lose to Arizona State, 90-80: The No. 21 Sun Devils were just too hot to handle for the Golden Eagles in Tempe. Former Whitefish Bay Dominican star Allazia Blockton had a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds for Marquette, but Arizona State shot 57.1 percent in the win.
Sunday
Packers beat Raiders, 30-20: It wasn’t always pretty, but with early offensive help from the defense, Green Bay got an important road win in Oakland. Defensive backs Micah Hyde and Damarious Randall intercepted Raiders quarterback Derek Carr in the first quarter, with Hyde returning his pick 34 yards to the Oakland 2-yard line and Randall bringing his back for a touchdown. Aaron Rodgers finished with 204 yards, a touchdown and an interception for a passer rating of only 68.8, while the running backs totaled just 86 yards. But hey, Tim Masthay (52.8-yard average) had a big day punting the ball.
Bucks beat Suns, 101-95: On the final contest of a four-game Western Conference trip, Milwaukee was focused, did not play at a turtle's pace and finally got a road win, ending its 12-game losing streak away from the Bradley Center. In Phoenix, the backcourt of Michael Carter-Williams (20 points, nine rebounds, six assists) and Khris Middleton (26 points, seven assists) led the way for the Bucks, who won without Giannis Antetokounmpo.
UW-Green Bay beat UW-Superior, 108-57: If you needed something to do in Green Bay on Sunday, you could have gone to the Resch Center and watched the Phoenix break 100 points for the first time in 10 years and rout the visiting Yellowjackets. UW-Green Bay broke the school record with 22 steals, and Tevin Findlay didn’t miss a shot in his 19-point game.
Born in Milwaukee but a product of Shorewood High School (go ‘Hounds!) and Northwestern University (go ‘Cats!), Jimmy never knew the schoolboy bliss of cheering for a winning football, basketball or baseball team. He's a proponent and frequent user of em dashes, parenthetical asides, descriptive appositives and, really, anything that makes his sentences longer and more needlessly complex.
Jimmy appreciates references to late '90s Brewers and Bucks players and is the curator of the unofficial John Jaha Hall of Fame. He also enjoys running, biking and soccer, but isn't too annoying about them.
