For the seventh straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2013."
Milwaukee has hosted a few different "Winterfests" or "Winter Fests" in the past both indoors, like the current one, and out, like the one in the '90s in Cathedral Square Park.
OnMilwaukee.com asked the Social Circle this week for thoughts about winter festivals. Would they like to see more "off-season" festivals? Should they be outside or inside?
What are your thoughts on cold-weather versions of Summerfest?
Robin Barry: "Winterfest always appeared to be more kids focused so I never went. If it was adult focused with music and other entertainment I'd consider going."
Liz Dupee-Schafer: "Winterfest should return, but it would need to be revamped. We tried to go a couple of years ago when they had it indoors at the convention center. They seriously told us at the gate that we shouldn't go in because there would be nothing for us to do. So we left. The place seemed deserted and the employee attitudes at the ticket booth were extremely negative."
Russ Fascia: "I had some good memories of Winterfest. It should be brought back and I'm just the man to do it."
Abigail Lynn Fowler: "I would absolutely go to a winter fest! I love winter."
Kat Froelich: "I tend to think of winter as a healthy break from fests, but I'm biased because I don't love the cold."
Amanda Holloway: "I was just saying the other day that I wish Milwaukee would bring back Winterfest. Skip the indoor skating rink, though. Too crowded in the tent."
Nancy Ketchman: "I went to the one in Cathedral Square. Loved the ice-skating, white lights in trees, very festive. Winterfest should be outside."
Hannah Medrow: "I went to the one in Cathedral Square, and it was nice. It was a beautiful winter night, and my mom and I had dinner at The Pfister and then walked over."
Jennifer Nowicki: "I remember living in Minneapolis with the ice castle and parade they had. Tons of people outside for a parade and it was almost -20."
Andrew Steeves: "There should be a winterfest, but not like it was when we had it. We should take a page from Duluth's book and do a giant polar bear swim and beach sports in the snow on Bradford Beach."
Lucky Tomaszek: "For the last two winters, there has been an attempt at re-staging Winterfest. It was held at the Wisconsin Center (previously known as the Midwest Express Center and the Delta Center). They haven't announced whether they're doing it again this year. It's a smallish festival with family activities. I heard it was pretty fun."
Brian Wooldridge: "Yep, I went to Winterfest and played it. Always fun."
Patty Zastrow-Jankowski: "Winterfest? Yuck!"
