Who knows how they pulled it off, but the husband / wife creative team behind The Little Friends of Printmaking has done it again. A year ago Melissa and James Buchanan transformed an empty room into the fully functional, professional Print & Publishing Lab at Discovery World, and now, somehow, they've succeeded in booking Yo La Tengo to play there.

No, the band is not playing in the actual lab, but it will be at Discovery World's Pilot House on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. It's the band's only Wisconsin stop on this tour.

They have this to say about the rare appearance:

"The Freewheeling Yo La Tengo Tour is a rare opportunity to see this ever-surprising band in a setting more intimate and interactive than any tour in their 23-year career. A little bit 'Storytellers,' a little bit 'Unplugged,' with a soupçon of their famously varied Hanukkah shows, it will feature the band playing an almost-acoustic set of songs from their entire catalog, with stories about their life as a band, and an encouraged back-and-forth with the audience. Already famous for never playing the same show twice, this fresh look at Yo La Tengo offers rare insight into one of the most important, unique, and beloved bands in American rock."

A month ago, Little Friends hosted Minneapolis rock poster masters Aesthetic Apparatus for a guest lecture at Discovery World. Arists Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski then went on to guest teach an Inkblot Academy class, during which students designed posters for an actual rock show happening in Milwaukee. Turns out, this was the secret show.

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
