There are plenty of thoughtful, intelligent rock music fans -- some of whom write about the industry for a living -- who claim that The Hold Steady is the only band that "really matters" right now. Hyperbole like that can do more harm than good, but it's not a stretch to say that the band, which plays July 1 at Summerfest, really does matter.
